The GIF on X is not actually a GIF
This is the detail that trips people up, so a Twitter GIF downloader has to say it out loud: when you attach a GIF to a post on X, the platform converts it. What gets stored and played back is a short MP4 video — silent, set to loop, with the playback controls hidden so it behaves like the animated image you uploaded. The .gif file you started with is gone the moment the upload finishes.
That conversion is why saving a GIF from X feels harder than it should. Long-pressing the animation gives you nothing useful, right-click offers “Copy video address” instead of “Save image as”, and screen recorders hand back a shaky clip with a cursor in it. Paste the post link here instead and you get the file X is really serving: a compact, seamless MP4 loop.
We ask for one thing — the public link to the post. No X username, no password, no connected app and no browser extension. If a downloader ever asks you to sign in to X to save a GIF, close the tab; that is how accounts get taken over, and no legitimate tool needs credentials to read a public post.
How to download a GIF from X

Find the post
Open the post carrying the GIF in the X app or on x.com. It has to be public — protected accounts are not readable by any tool, and this one is no exception.
Copy the link
Tap the share icon under the post and choose “Copy link”. On desktop, the timestamp of the post is a link too, or you can lift the URL straight from the address bar.

What to do with the loop once you have it
If you need a genuine .gif — for an email signature, a documentation page or an old forum that will not embed video — you have to convert the MP4 back. Almost any editor or free converter will do it, but be ready to lose ground: a real GIF is capped at 256 colours per frame, so gradients band and file size climbs fast. Trim to the two seconds that matter and drop the frame rate before you convert, rather than after.
If the destination is short-form video, keep the MP4. TikTok, Reels and Shorts all take it directly, and a looping clip makes a decent hook or B-roll insert — but it arrives with no audio, so plan a sound on top of it. A silent three-second loop dropped into a feed that expects music tends to be scrolled past.
And if you are building a reaction library, save the loops with names you will actually search for later. The filename X hands over is a string of digits that tells you nothing. Ten seconds of renaming at save time is the difference between a folder you use and a folder you forget.
Before you download: rights and limits
Downloading does not transfer ownership. Most GIFs circulating on X are clipped from films, series, sports broadcasts or other people’s videos, and saving a copy gives you a file, not a licence. Personal use is one thing; putting someone else’s loop into an ad, a thumbnail or a monetised video is another, and the rights holder decides which is which.
Protected accounts, deleted posts and anything behind a block cannot be retrieved by this tool or any other legitimate one, and we would not want to build something that could. Any site claiming otherwise is either bluffing or fishing for your password.
