Instagram Symbols Meaning: What Each Icon in the App Does
Saw an icon in Instagram and not sure what it means? Find it below, grouped by where it shows up, with a plain explanation of what it does.
Story symbols
Icons that appear while you post or watch stories. They are brief, which is why they cause the most confusion.
- Circular arrow / refresh
- The story did not finish uploading. Tap it to retry. It usually means the connection dropped, not that your account has a problem.
- Eye with a number
- On your own story, the number of viewers. Tap it to see the list of people who watched.
- Chevron or arrow up
- There is a link, sticker action or extra content to open. Swipe up or tap to follow it.
- Green ring around a profile picture
- The story is shared only with that person's Close Friends list, so not every follower can see it.
- Faded or grey ring
- You have already watched everything in that person's current story.
Post and feed symbols
The controls under every post and the markers that sit on the post itself.
- Heart
- Like. A filled heart means you liked it. The number beside it is the total like count.
- Speech bubble
- Comments. Tap to open the conversation. The number is how many comments there are.
- Paper plane
- Send. Opens options to share the post in a direct message or to your story.
- Bookmark / ribbon
- Save. Adds the post to your private saved collection. The poster is not notified.
- Shopping bag
- The post has tagged products or the account has a shop. Tapping opens product details.
- Stacked squares
- A carousel with more than one photo or video. Swipe sideways to see the rest.
- Speaker with a line through it
- Sound is muted. Tap to turn audio on for videos.
Direct message symbols
Icons inside your inbox and chats, where the drawing does not always explain the meaning.
- Screenshot indicator
- Tells the sender that a disappearing photo or video was screenshotted. It does not apply to ordinary messages.
- Camera in a chat
- Sends a disappearing photo or video that can be viewed once, or replayed once, before it is gone.
- Seen
- The message has been opened by the other person.
- View once marker
- The photo or video disappears after it is opened, so it cannot be reopened later.
- Dot or badge on the inbox icon
- You have unread messages, or a message request waiting in a separate tab.
Profile and account symbols
What appears on a profile, including a few that are easy to mistake for something else.
- Blue tick
- A verified account. Instagram grants it; it cannot be typed, and look-alike characters are not the badge.
- Grid, Reels and tagged tabs
- The tabs under a bio: grid posts, Reels, and posts where other people tagged that account.
- Person with a plus
- Follow, or discover similar accounts, depending on where it appears.
- Bell
- Notification settings for that account's posts, stories and lives, separate from following.
- Padlock
- A private account. You need to be approved as a follower before you can see its posts.

Why Instagram symbols are confusing
Instagram leans on icons instead of words to keep the screen clean. That works once you know them, but many only appear in specific moments, such as while a story is uploading or after someone screenshots a disappearing photo. If you only see an icon now and then, it is easy to forget what it does.
The app also redesigns its interface regularly. Icons move, change shape or disappear between versions, and iPhone and Android can draw the same control slightly differently. Two people comparing phones can see different symbols in the same place simply because one has a newer build.
For that reason the entries in this Instagram symbols meaning guide describe what each icon does, not just how it looks. The behavior behind an icon usually survives a redesign even when the drawing does not.
Symbols to use versus symbols to understand
This page is for decoding icons you see in the app. If you want decorative symbols to copy into your own bio, such as hearts, arrows or dividers, use our Instagram bio symbols tool instead, and pair it with the line break generator to space everything neatly.
One icon deserves care: the blue verification badge. It is granted by Instagram, it cannot be typed, and look-alike characters pasted into a name to imitate it count as impersonation. That can cost you the account, so leave it out of your bio and display name.
