Why an Instagram character count can surprise you
Most people only discover a limit when the app stops accepting input halfway through a sentence. A bio is the classic case: it feels roomy until you add a few line breaks, an emoji or two and a link prompt, and suddenly the last word will not fit.
Spaces and line breaks count toward the total, and so do hashtags and mentions. That is why a neatly spaced bio runs out sooner than the visible words suggest. Checking the count first saves you from rewriting on your phone with the keyboard covering half the screen.
This Instagram character counter counts by Unicode code point rather than raw string length, which treats emoji and symbols closer to how the platforms do. Some simple counters score a single emoji as two characters, which can make a bio look over the limit when it is not.
The caption cut-off matters more than the hard limit
Instagram captions allow plenty of room, but the feed only shows the opening portion before folding the rest behind a more link. For the caption setting, the counter marks roughly where that fold lands so you can see what people read without tapping.
Put the hook, the question or the key detail before that point. Everything after it is for the people who were already interested enough to expand the caption, so it can be longer and more relaxed.
TikTok works the same way in a smaller space, and its bio is much shorter than an Instagram bio. If you reuse one profile line across both apps, check the TikTok version separately.
